MINUTES OF THE BARNES AREA HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION MEETING

OF APRIL 16, 2009

A delicious brunch was served at 9:00am. BAHA wants to thank George Martin, Ariel and John Amend, Carol and Dave Pease and Lu Peet for providing the meal.

President Dave Pease called the regular meeting to order at 9:35am. The meeting was held at the VFW hall on Lake Road.

Members present: Dave Pease, Carol Pease, John Amend, Ariel Amend, George Martin, Bob Oberstar, Linda Oberstar, Dean Peet, Mike Bowes, Margaret Bossow and Lu Peet. It was established that a quorum was present.

Secretary Lu Peet handed out the agendas and Minutes of the February 19, 2009 BAHA meeting. Motion (Carol Pease / Mike Bowes) to approve the February 19, 2009 minutes as presented. Call for discussion. Motion carried.

There was no Treasurer’s Report as nothing came through from Treasurer Quentin Ruprecht. Quentin will be back the later part of April and will have the updated report for the May meeting. Lu Peet paid the CPA and the Calendar of Events fee out of her personal funds so that was taken care of. [We had no more checks.]Lu will get together with Quentin to straighten this out.

Correspondence: The Chicago Fund Raiser Seminar was discussed.  The group felt we weren’t quite ready for this yet. Carol Pease said that we need to think about storytelling, also. We will keep a file on this. Venture North will feature Dave Thorson’s Down to Earth Tours this next week. It will be on Channel 8 on Thursday and then again on Sunday morning.

Old Business:

1.  CD’s-Carol Pease reported that the CD’s have been taken care of, as far as reinvesting them. She wasn’t sure as to what percentage the credit union is paying. Margaret Bossow said she recently had some dealings with some financial institutions in Superior that were paying a pretty good rate. She will check on these rates for us.

2.  Signs-Mike Bowes said he was waiting for Quentin Ruprecht to get back home to get the sign board from the old Silver Beach Resort. Mike said his wife Marilyn would assist us with the sign. Lu Peet said that she had talked to Mike Furtak from Bayfield County Zoning as to what we need to do for the sign. We will need a permit that will cost $50.00. Lu will pick up a form next week at the town hall. Mike Furtak said we have to be conscious of where we put the sign so that we don’t have to re-apply again. The sign must be a maximum of 50 square feet; it must be no higher than 10 feet from the ground; it must be at least 3 feet from any property boundary lines or right of ways and it should remain in the same location as the original permit states. Mike Furtak did indicate that we can lift the sign for purposes of building, etc., but that the sign should go right back to its original location. We need to plan ahead. Margaret Bossow said that on that thought, we need to think about putting in the substructure for things such as water and septic in our proposed building/ storage shed, even though we may not start out with them.  It is less expensive than trying to put this in after the concrete is down. Margaret has worked in this field and has a lot of information and knowledge in this area. She will be glad to share her knowledge with us.

3.  Federal Form 990 EZ- Anderson, Hager and Moe filed an extension for BAHA and filled out the form for us. Linda Oberstar, Quentin Ruprecht and Lu Peet all felt that there was more to this form than the “postcard” and that we needed to file an accurate report this year. The cost to compile our records, request the extension and do the work on the 990 report came to $425.00. Lu Peet paid for it when she picked up the report. It is due by May 15, 2009. Linda Oberstar, as Alternate Treasurer, has to sign the document along with Lu Peet. Lu will then send it in. We do not owe anything to either the state or the IRS. Motion (Carol Pease / Bob Oberstar) to pay Lu Peet for the $425.00 for the CPA work. Call for discussion. Motion carried.

New Business:

1.      Re-order of Centennial Books-Carol Pease said we were down to about 50 books. Carol recommended that we get 1,000 books for the re-order. [A motion was made and seconded to get 1,000 books reprinted, but the motion was out of order as the people making and seconding the motion were not board members. We will present this issue again at our special meeting on the 30th of April, if a quorum is present.] There was discussion on keeping the new supply of books at Margaret Bossow’s house, as she has a large area to store them. Margaret said she also has access to various supply catalogues through her business [Margaret does jewelry and photography] and would be glad to check on prices and availability for us. Linda Oberstar said she would check on the prices of the books at the Country Print Shop in Hayward. We have the disk. We need to save a copy of the misprinted book for the museum. Margaret said she would be glad to go to the book stores in Hayward to see if they would carry the Centennial Book and also contact the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center near Ashland.

2.      Book for Memorials to the Museum Fund- There was discussion on getting a book to keep the records of those who have donated memorials to the Museum Fund. Lu Peet said that as of now, we just have the paper records in the file, but these should be kept in a book for future reference. We could eventually have a memorial “brick” or “plague” or other recognition for the memorials and we will have to have these records available. Ariel Amend said that in her past historical work, they used Mylar loose-leaf pages for the memorials and had a cover page that would slip into the front of the notebook. There was discussion on using the various Mylar products for pictures, newspaper articles, Life Members, etc. To preserve the artifacts, we also have to use acid free materials and keep them out of the light and sun. There is a spray to use on newspaper articles, Carol said.

3.      County Historical meeting-Carol Pease said that she has a list of the newspapers on micro fiche. These were from the Iron River, Washburn and Bayfield area papers. She gave the list to the secretary.

4.      Mylar materials-(see above report on the books for the discussion on Mylar products)

5.      Donations to the Barnes Ambulance defibrillator costs-Dave Pease noted that the Ambulance Department had met its goals for the defibrillator, but since then the cost has gone up. The department needs help with the cost of training and other incidental costs associated with the defibrillator, so they still need our help. Margaret Bossow, a member of the department, agreed, saying that there will be continuing costs such as cell phone service and more training, etc. Motion (Linda Oberstar / Carol Pease) to donate $100.00 to the Ambulance Department Defibrillator Fund. Call for discussion. Motion carried. When Treasurer Quentin Ruprecht gets back, he will issue the check to the town.

6.      Meet with Valentine Vogel to look at Kenosha Natural History Museum plans- We will meet with Mr. Vogel, if it is convenient for him, on Thursday April 30th at 9:00am at the VFW hall. Lu Peet will contact him to make the arrangements.

7.      Potential BAHA float for July 4th parade- Dave Pease said he was preparing to be Uncle Sam, an important symbol for different eras in US history. [His beard is coming in fine!!!] Uncle Sam was a folk item during the Civil War, an active public image during both WWI and WWII and as an advocate of the savings bonds in the current era. There was discussion on how we could incorporate this into our float. We could say “We need you”-as members of BAHA. George Martin said he has materials available for the float, as do several other members. Lu Peet will contact the float committee.

A motion was entertained to adjourn the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 10:45am. The next regular meeting will be held on May 21, 2009 at 9:00am at the VFW hall. There will be the special meeting on April 30th at 9:00am, also at the hall, for the purpose of looking at the plans from Mr. Vogel.

Respectfully submitted,

Lu Peet
