MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL BOARD MEETING OF

THE BARNES AREA HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION OF MAY 31, 2009

The special board meeting was called to order at 12pm on Sunday, May 31, 2009 by President Dave Pease. The meeting was held at the home of Helen and Quentin Ruprecht.

Members in attendance were Helen Ruprecht, Quentin Ruprecht, Dave Pease, Carol Pease, Nila Emerich, Dave Emerich and Lu Peet. [Lu arrived about 12:30pm] It was established that a quorum was present.

The purpose of the special meeting was to discuss the new sign that will go on the BAHA property on Lake Road and also to discuss the 4th of July Parade and float.

Quentin had some ideas on what the sign for the property would look like. He showed the group some drafts. There was discussion on what the wording should be. Quentin thought that saying “Future Home of the Barnes Area Historical Center” might be better than “Museum” There was discussion on the wording. Motion (Quentin Ruprecht/ Helen Ruprecht) to adopt the wording “Future Home of the Barnes Area Historical Center” for our sign. Call for discussion. Dave Pease said we needed to have the exact wording for the sign permit. The group felt this was a good idea. Motion carried. Dave Pease will fill out the sign permit. It was decided to put the sign on the curve facing the Lake Road. We have to keep the same place for the sign for the future; otherwise we have to get a new permit. There was discussion on the size (4’ x 8’). This will be new sign board, not the old Silver Beach sign as had been discussed at an earlier meeting. Mike Bowes’s wife will help with the sign. The group will get together to do the sign soon. The sign permit will cost $50.00. Motion (Carol Pease/ Dave Pease) to approve paying $50.00 to the county for the sign permit. Call for discussion. Dave Pease said he would see Mike Furtak on Tuesday to take care of this. Motion carried.

The group then focused on the 4th of July float and parade. Carol Pease brought up the idea of having some small flags to hand out along the parade route. She showed a sample of the flags. Motion (Lu Peet/ Helen Ruprecht) to get 8 packages of the flags for $55.92. Call for discussion. Carol said if we spend this amount, we will get the free shipping. Motion carried. There was discussion on having some straw to sit on for the float. This would be better than chairs, as the chairs could slide around. Quentin’s trailer does not have any sides on it. Mike Alston will be contacted to see if he has any straw bales. There was discussion on what kind of decorations we would have. Dave Pease will be dressed as Uncle Sam. There was discussion on having some sort of foam hand with the finger pointing to the crowd saying “BAHA wants you”. Carol will talk to Kurt Kuhlman on this. It probably would be best if Dave sat facing the front, but sitting to the rear of the float. Quentin will use his truck and trailer and we can work on the float at the Ruprecht’s as needed. George Martin indicated at the last meeting that he had materials for the float, like bunting, etc. Lu Peet also has some red, white and blue decorations. Carol Pease thought she had an old military uniform at her house. Lu will contact the Ashland theater group to see if they have any costumes available. We will check out other sources as well. Dave Emerich showed some signs that we could have on the sides of the truck and float. There was discussion on what size and how much the signs would cost and what the signs would say. The signs could be weatherized so that they could be used for more than one occasion. We have to wait to see what the signs will cost before ordering them. This will be decided at the next meeting. There would be BAHA members walking along the parade route, passing out flags and possibly literature on BAHA (The brochures that were put in the tax bills could be handed out.) Lu has them at her house. There was discussion on who would be on the float along with Dave. Some members may also be on the float.

There was no motion to adjourn. The meeting ended at 1:45pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Lu Peet   Barnes Area Historical Association, Inc. Secretary
