This shows a net profit difference of ($178.14) from what was reported last month Linda said. There may also still be some changes both to expenses and income and she will report them when they occur. Linda said that she had to get more deposit slips with our correct name on them. Linda also reported that we only have to fill out the post card form (990N) for the IRS as our gross income was below the $25,000.00 threshold. She will take care of this. This is due in October as our financial year ends in September. Carol Pease checked the accounts and found them in order. Motion (Jon Harkness / Lu Peet) to approve the Treasurer’s Report as given. Call for discussion. Motion carried.

Correspondence: Carol Pease reported that she had received a letter with historical information and a picture from Vincent Scorsone along with a donation for $10.00. He does not want to become a member at this time. The secretary will send a donation receipt and thank you to him. Lu Peet reported that Dave Thorson had done an updated version of the Elk story for the web site. It hadn’t been done since 2007 and several changes were needed. Ron Pearson put this on the web for us.

Old Business:

  1. Land Issues-VFW Land-The VFW had originally made an offer to lease the land to us, but Dave Pease felt that BAHA should pay for the land instead. This would help out the VFW and would show as an example that we are willing to work together. Dave Pease said that all of this is dependant on what the survey shows for the land. Right now the current valuation of F1 undeveloped land is about $1,500.00 an acre. There was discussion on this issue. Bob Oberstar said that in talking to the Zoning Administrator, Mike Furtak, that we should have no problems with this. We will have to get permits however. The VFW has someone who could do the surveying of the property, but that person is out of town until April. Dave Pease said this process would take awhile. The members should think about this for the next meeting. The minimum requirement for F1 is 4 ½ acres and we should be able to meet that. Motion (Jon Harkness / Bob Oberstar) to explore this process to take action to proceed with looking into this option. Call for discussion. Bob Oberstar said that the VFW will be discussing this at its next meeting also. Motion carried.
  2. IRS Report-May need Jan (Dykema) Seymour’s help-This was discussed during the Treasurer’s Report. The ruling for the $25,000.00 only took effect this year, so we do not have to file for 2007. BAHA would still like Jan to come to one of our meetings to talk to us. Lu Peet will contact her to find out if she could possibly come to the next breakfast meeting on Saturday April 19th. (Ariel Amend, one of our new members asked how we get the membership information out. BAHA does have membership information available at all of our events. George Martin said that we have to talk up our organization to people as well. Ariel and John Amend had previous museum experience where they used to live in Southern Wisconsin.)
  3. Ertel House and Sale Items-After discussion, the weekend of Memorial Day (one day-Saturday May 24, 2008) would be the best time to have the sale. It would be a household sale instead of an estate sale. Carol Pease said that we could possible have items from Kurt Kuhlman’s mother’s estate. Kurt will get back to us on this. These items may or may not be in this sale.
    1. BAHA has to find out from the Ertel’s if this date is OK with them. Lu Peet will contact Mr. Ertel.
    2. We also need to find out about any liability issues for the on site sale.
    3. We need to take an inventory of what is there and find out what items the Ertel’s want to keep.
    4. We need to decide on a day (or days) to mark the items. This will be decided at the next meeting.

George Martin made a suggestion that we meet at the VFW from now on. Motion (Bob Oberstar / Lu Peet) to have future meetings at the VFW unless specifically noted as changed, such as the breakfast meetings. Call for discussion. Motion carried.

Joh Harkness said that he had a friend who was a professor from UW that was an expert on Indian history. This person has a cabin near his home by Cranberry Lake. This person is on sabbatical right now and he felt she would be interested in talking to our group. She is interested in the elk, as well as Early American Indian history. He will ask her if she would be available as a guest speaker for our next meeting. This person has grad students available as well, who might be able to help us.

New Business:

  1. Breakfast meeting on April 19, 2008-There was discussion on where the meeting should take place. Maki’s Restaurant was the first choice, with Trading Post the second option and the third option would be the VFW. If at the VFW, the members would all bring a breakfast item to pass and have it as a potluck meeting. Lu Peet will check with the restaurant (s) to see what is available. It will be held at 9:00am.
  2. Newspaper Clippings-Dave Pease said that he had received some old newspaper clippings (Beatrix Howard) from the Drummond Museum and that Sheri Pederson said she would be happy to help us with the preservation of the clippings. Mylar would work well. It is a little expensive, but Carol Pease said we need to protect out historical artifacts.
  3. Authors, Artists and Artifacts-Lu Peet said that she has gotten at least five authors to set up for the Riverfest event in June. Phyllis (Karr) Hoyt, Emily Davis, Harry Sarazin, Jim Hardy and Franco Pagnucci are some of the authors who have committed to come. Susan Pagnucci is an artist who has committed to come. There was discussion on who else could be contacted. Lu Peet will contact those whose names were brought up and will also get back to the others on the details.

Jon Harkness spoke on displays we might consider in the future.

Motion (Lu Peet / George Martin) to adjourn the meeting. Call for discussion. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 10:15am.The next meeting will be held on Saturday April 19, 2008 at 9:00am. The location will be announced as soon as it is known where it will be. This will be a breakfast meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Lu Peet

Barnes Area Historical Association Secretary
