MINUTES OF THE BARNES AREA HISTORICAL
ASSOCIATION MEETING
OF SEPTEMBER 21, 2006
President Dave Pease called
the meeting to order at 9:45am.
Secretary Lu Peet had given a
copy of the minutes of the August meeting to all members. Motion (Carol Pease / Helen
Ruprecht) to approve the minutes as presented. Call for discussion.
Motion
carried.
The Treasurer’s Report had
been given previously at the Annual Meeting. There was discussion on the flea
market sales of $1,345.00 from this past summer. Carol Pease has asked that
this be put into a CD. There was discussion on whether to stay with the State
Bank of Drummond or to look at other alternatives. Several alternatives will be
looked into before getting the new CD. Linda will look into the Credit Union
and also other banks. Motion (Carol Pease / Jon Harkness) to put
the $1,345.00 into a CD contingent on the best interest rates. Call
for discussion. Motion carried.
Elk Report- Quentin Ruprecht
had no new updates for the members at this time. Dr. Hudson has been working on
getting the new carbon dating done. Dr. Hudson has put our money into the
better carbon dating process.
The BAHA has received three
“thank you” notes from the university.
Fund Raising
Flea Markets-There was
discussion on taking over the AARP Flea Market at the town hall in July as the
AARP group has disbanded. This would be a good opportunity for us to get our
name out there. There could even be a pie and ice cream social to go along with
this. Carol Pease will talk to Sharon
Moen about doing this and getting the contacts and particulars. This Flea
Market event will be voted on at the next meeting after the issues have been
checked out. There was discussion on
future sales.
Book Sales-There was
discussion on the Centennial Books. We have approximately 200 left to sell.
Kurt Kuhlman said he would take some and put them on E Bay for $30.00. He could
have some of them signed by Dave Thorson. He would include a copy of the
Centennial Booklet and Elk Information along with the books. Motion
(Helen Ruprecht / Lu Peet) to have Kurt Kuhlman put the books on E Bay for
$30.00 plus shipping and handling. Call for discussion. Motion
carried.
Jon Harkness mentioned that
deer hunters are willing to spend money and could we have something for them.
Site Update-Bob Oberstar said
that the latest is the commitment from the Town for 10+ acres at the town site.
Bob said that he has also been in contact with Fritz Barnes and will set up a
meeting with him. Dave Pease and Quentin Ruprecht are welcome to come too. At least we will have made an attempt to talk
to him about land. Dave Pease wanted to thank Bob for initiating this contact.
Bob said that we still need to keep other options open, such as the N and 27
parcel. There was discussion on sending a letter to the timber company on the
land. It was decided not to do this at this time. Jon Harkness may have some
connections that he will pursue. There was also discussion on the land that
Eleanor Desrosiers has offered for sale.
By Laws- Nori Newago will
have the updates done so that this may be voted on next meeting.
Non Profit Status- Nori
Newago said that she had to redo the application, as the forms had changed and
she had to do the new ones and resubmit them. This will take another 5-7 months
before we get our own number. There was discussion on what our rights as an
organization are until we get this number and what can we give to people who
donate money to us until we get this number.
Historical items-There was
discussion on how we should manage the accumulating historical items that we
are getting in. We need three people to take in items. We also need to find out
where all of our information is now. Lu Peet said that she would be glad to do
the inputting of information into a software program when we get one. There was
discussion on software programs. Nori said that she had the name of one
software program and there is also the one that Dave Thorson has. Nori said
that we need a committee for accessions (what we have gotten in). There is a
two-page document that has to be filled out for all acquisitions strictly for
museum items. Nori handed out a copy of
this form. The committee will determine what the criteria for the items should
be. This committee will be comprised of the following people: Carol Pease; Kurt
Kuhlman; Lu Peet; and Nori Newago as a consultant. We also will need an
Historian, but that is not a priority for this meeting. Nori asked that she be paid for her work on
the 501 ( c ) (3). We owe her $500.00. Motion (Jon Harkness / Bob Oberstar) to
pay Nori the $500.00. Call for discussion. Motion carried.
Linda will write her a check today.
There was a note made as to
the meeting with Jan Dykema on September 28, 2006 at 10:00am at the VFW hall.
We will be discussing the objectives of the BAHA. Please be sure to bring the
copy of the booklet on starting a museum, along with your comments and
suggestions. Kurt Kuhlman and the Rupechts gave their written suggestions to Lu
Peet, as they will be unable to attend that meeting.
Winter Fest Event-Lu Peet and
the Ruprechts will come up with a poster for the raffle event to be held in
February.
There was discussion on
having a motto for our organization. There was also discussion that all fourth
grade students must take Wisconsin history and we could be a part of that study
with our museum. Carol Pease said that
we will need study areas and interactive displays-mock digs, etc. Bob Oberstar
said that he knows of a man associated with the Potosi Wisconsin historical
brewery who might be able to come and speak to our group about getting
foundations to help us.
Insurance- Marilyn Halvorsen
will be asked to come to our next meeting to help us with the insurance
applications for the Treasurer’s Bond and for the Errors and Omissions Policy
on the Board.
Jon Harkness said that we
need to communicate with the other organizations in town.
Motion (Quentin Ruprecht / George
Martin) to adjourn the meeting. Call for discussion. Motion carried.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:55am. The next regular meeting will be held on
Thursday October 19, 2006 at 9:00am at Downtown Barnes.
Respectfully submitted,
